Compress an image to 200 KB

Drop your image: the 200 KB target is set, and the tool picks the highest JPG quality that fits, scaling the image down only if it has to. Typical photos fit 200 KB at 1200–1600 px wide with no visible loss, which suits job portals, visa and application forms, and images inside web pages.

200 KB preset. JPG output, the format job portals and content systems accept by default.

Room for detail. At 200 KB a photo can stay 1200–1600 px wide, sharp enough for a full page column.

Fits or scales. If quality alone cannot reach 200 KB, the dimensions shrink step by step.

Stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and EXIF and GPS location are removed from the JPG.

How it works

Step 1

Add the image

Drop a photo, scan or screenshot on the tool. The 200 KB target and JPG output are already set.

Step 2

Choose a width if you need one

Turn on Limit width for a predictable result: 600–800 px for a square ID photo, 1200 px for a blog column, 1600 px for a wide banner.

Step 3

Let it find the quality

The tool tries the highest quality first and lowers it until the JPG is under 200 KB.

Step 4

Download and upload

Download the JPG and upload it to the portal or page. Use a simple file name without special characters if the form is picky.

Who asks for images under 200 KB?

Job and recruitment portals often cap a candidate photo or a scanned certificate at around 200 KB, and many university and visa forms sit in the same range. One well-known example: the US visa application (DS-160) requires a square JPEG photo of 600×600 to 1200×1200 px and no more than 240 KB (as of October 2026), so a 200 KB target leaves a comfortable margin. On websites, 200 KB is a sensible upper budget for a large content image or a blog header.

The State Department also asks for a compression ratio no higher than 20:1, which means a visa photo should not be squeezed too hard either. Cropping square and setting Limit width to 600 px keeps you inside both rules in practice: at 600×600 px the 20:1 floor is about 54 KB, and the tool picks the highest quality under 200 KB rather than the lowest.

What dimensions fit in 200 KB?

Typical JPG results under 200 KB; very detailed or noisy photos need smaller sizes.

How do I compress a photo for a job application portal?

  1. Read the portal's rules: maximum size, accepted formats, and any required dimensions.
  2. Crop to head and shoulders on a plain background, in the ratio the portal asks for.
  3. Drop the photo on the tool above; 200 KB and JPG are preset.
  4. If dimensions are required, turn on Limit width and type the width.
  5. Download the JPG and upload it. If the portal counts 200 KB as 200,000 bytes and refuses it, set the target to 195 KB.

What happens when 200 KB is too small?

The tool lowers the quality, keeping the highest one that fits, then scales the dimensions down step by step if needed. At 200 KB that only happens with large or very detailed images, such as a full-resolution phone photo or a high-resolution scan. If a portal also limits dimensions or needs a different format, fix “image too large to upload” walks through each error message.

Is 200 KB a good size for website images?

For a large image, yes: a 1200–1600 px hero or article image at 200 KB looks sharp and loads quickly. Regular content images can usually be 100 KB or less. If the image is for your own site, consider WebP, which keeps more detail at the same size: JPG to WebP converts it, and the free image audit shows which images on a page weigh the most. The full routine is in how to prepare images for the web.

Scan at 150–200 dpi
A page scanned at 600 dpi has 9 to 16 times more pixels than one scanned at 150–200 dpi, and those pixels force heavy compression to reach 200 KB. Scan at 150–200 dpi for documents you upload.

Image to 200 KB: questions

Keep it around 1200–1600 px wide and let the tool pick the highest quality under 200 KB. At that size most photos show no visible loss on screen.

Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, tap the tool and choose the photo; the 200 KB target is already set. The JPG is saved to Files on iPhone or Downloads on Android.

Crop the photo square, set Limit width to 600 px and keep this page's 200 KB target, which leaves a margin under the 240 KB limit. The DS-160 accepts square JPEGs from 600×600 to 1200×1200 px.

Yes. Crop the page edges, scan or photograph it at 150–200 dpi, and drop it here; a clean page of text stays readable at 1200–1600 px on the long side.

Only if quality alone cannot get it under 200 KB, which mostly happens with full-resolution phone photos. Set Limit width yourself if you want to choose the final dimensions.
