WebP supports an alpha channel (transparency) like PNG and animation like GIF. The browser converter encodes still images with transparency preserved; for animated GIFs it converts the first frame, because browsers' canvas API exposes a single frame. The API and the AI-assistant integrations convert animated GIFs to animated WebP.

AVIF compresses slightly better than WebP but is slower to encode, has weaker tooling support and is not available in every browser or CMS yet.
