WebP supports an alpha channel (transparency) like PNG and animation like GIF. This converter encodes still images with transparency preserved; for animated GIFs only the first frame is converted, because browsers' canvas API exposes a single frame.

AVIF compresses slightly better than WebP but is slower to encode, has weaker tooling support and is not available in every browser or CMS yet.
