Convert BMP to WebP online

BMP files are uncompressed: every pixel is stored raw, which is why a simple screenshot can weigh 5–10 MB. WebP encodes the same image with intelligent compression, routinely shrinking BMPs by 95% or more. Drop your bitmap below and get a web-ready WebP instantly.

Why convert BMP to WebP?

95%+ smaller. BMP stores raw pixels; WebP compresses them intelligently.

Web compatible. BMP is not reliably displayed by browsers or accepted by most CMS platforms; WebP is.

Same visual result. At 90% quality, a WebP is indistinguishable from the uncompressed bitmap.

Legacy rescue. Perfect for old Windows Paint exports, scanner output and screenshot archives.

Why BMP files are so large

The Windows Bitmap format dates back to the earliest versions of Windows and, in its common form, applies no compression whatsoever. A 1920×1080 24-bit BMP is always about 6.2 MB regardless of content. That is fine for a program writing to the screen, but hopeless for the web, email or cloud storage.

Best settings for BMP to WebP

Because bitmaps are pristine sources, you have headroom. Photographic bitmaps look perfect at 80%; screenshots and diagrams should use 88–95% to keep text razor sharp. Combine with a sensible maximum width and a 6 MB bitmap becomes a 60 KB WebP.
