Compress an image to 20 KB

Drop your photo or scanned signature: the target is already 20 KB, and the tool picks the highest JPG quality that fits, scaling the image down step by step if even a low quality is too big. A signature around 400×150 px or a photo around 300–400 px wide typically lands under 20 KB with clean detail, so crop tight first: every pixel you keep costs bytes.

20 KB is preset. The output is JPG, the format exam and government forms ask for.

Best quality that fits. The tool searches for the highest quality under 20 KB instead of crushing the image to the minimum.

Scales down only if needed. When a large photo cannot fit, its dimensions shrink step by step until it does.

Nothing uploaded. Your ID photo and signature stay on your device, and EXIF and GPS data are removed.

How it works

Step 1

Crop the photo or signature

In your phone's photo editor, crop to just the face or just the signature. A tight crop on a plain background is what makes 20 KB possible.

Step 2

Drop it on the tool

Add the JPG, PNG or phone photo. The 20 KB target and the JPG output are already set.

Step 3

Match the required width

If the form gives pixel dimensions, turn on Limit width and type the width, for example 140 for a 140×60 px signature.

Step 4

Download and upload

Download the JPG and check its size in your file manager, then upload it to the form.

Who asks for an image under 20 KB?

Almost always an online application form: exam registrations, government job portals, scholarship and university applications, ID and certificate requests. Limits this small are meant for signatures and small passport-style photos, which the portal stores by the million and prints at stamp size. As an example, Indian bank exam portals such as IBPS typically ask for a photo of 20–50 KB at 200×230 px and a signature of 10–20 KB at 140×60 px (as of October 2026). Rules change between exams and years, so always check the notice for yours; photo and signature size for online forms collects the common ones.

What pixel size fits in 20 KB?

Typical JPG results under 20 KB. Real sizes depend on detail, noise and background.

ImageTypical dimensions under 20 KBNotes
Signature, black ink on white paperUp to about 400×150 pxMostly white, so it compresses very well

What happens if my image is too big for 20 KB?

The tool first lowers the JPG quality, keeping the highest quality that fits. If the image is still over 20 KB at a low quality, it reduces the dimensions step by step until it fits. A 12-megapixel phone photo therefore comes out only a few hundred pixels wide. That is fine for most portals, but if the form requires exact dimensions, crop the image yourself and set Limit width, so you decide the final size rather than the tool. More on how the search works in how to compress an image to a specific size.

How do I get a signature under 20 KB?

  1. Sign with a black or dark blue pen on plain white paper, larger than you normally would.
  2. Photograph it flat, in daylight, without your shadow or the edge of the table in the frame.
  3. Crop tightly around the signature so almost no empty paper remains.
  4. Drop it on the tool above. If the form gives a size such as 140×60 px, set Limit width to 140.
  5. Download the JPG. A clean signature usually lands well under 20 KB at a high quality.

Why does the form reject my 19 KB file?

  • The dimensions are wrong. Many portals check pixels as well as kilobytes. Crop to the required shape and set Limit width.
  • There is a minimum too. A range such as 10–20 KB or 20–50 KB rejects files that are too small. For a 20–50 KB photo, use Image to 50 KB: the tool keeps the highest quality under the cap, so the file rarely ends up too small.
  • KB is counted differently. Some sites count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, others as 1,024. The tool counts the strict way (1,000 bytes), so its 20 KB passes both.
  • The format is wrong. Some forms accept only .jpg; this page always outputs JPG, so re-download from here rather than renaming another file.

Image to 20 KB: questions

Crop tight and keep the dimensions small, around 300–400 px wide for a photo, then let the tool pick the highest quality that fits. With few pixels to store, the quality stays high and the face stays sharp.

Photograph or scan the signature on white paper, crop it tightly and drop it here: the 20 KB target is preset. A tight crop around 400×150 px or smaller usually fits with clean lines.

Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, tap the tool and choose the photo; the target is already 20 KB. The JPG is saved to Files on iPhone or Downloads on Android, ready to attach to the form.

Yes, this page always outputs JPG. JPEG cannot store transparency, so a transparent background will not be kept; sign on white paper to avoid surprises.

Keep the 20 KB target: the tool chooses the highest quality that fits, so the file usually lands near the cap rather than far below it. If it still comes out under 10 KB, use a slightly larger crop or width.
