Where is 2 MB the upload limit?
YouTube thumbnails from a phone. In the YouTube mobile app, custom video thumbnails must be 2 MB or less, while YouTube Studio on a computer accepts up to 50 MB (as of October 2026). Thumbnails are JPG or PNG in 16:9, at least 640 px wide.
Self-hosted websites and forums. PHP, which runs WordPress and many forums, ships with a default upload limit of 2 MB. Many hosts raise it, but on basic hosting, contact forms, forums and WordPress media uploads often refuse anything bigger. Many other forms and portals stop at 2 MB too; the main platforms are listed in image upload size limits by platform.
How do I get a YouTube thumbnail under 2 MB?
- Design the thumbnail in 16:9, for example 1280×720 or 1920×1080 px, and export it as JPG or PNG.
- Drop it on the tool above; the 2 MB target is set and the format is kept.
- Download the result and check it is under 2 MB in your Files app or file manager.
- In the YouTube app, edit the video, change the thumbnail and pick the new file.
A PNG thumbnail full of photos and gradients is the usual reason a thumbnail goes over 2 MB. Reducing it to a palette of up to 256 colors usually fixes that; if you then see banding in a sky or a gradient, set the output format to JPG, which handles photographic content better.
What fits in 2 MB?
Typical results under 2 MB; very detailed or noisy images may be scaled a little.
| Image | Typical result under 2 MB | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail 1280×720 or 1920×1080, JPG or PNG | Full size, high quality | Plenty of room |
| Thumbnail 3840×2160, JPG | Usually full size | A PNG may need the palette step or JPG output |
| 12 MP phone photo, JPG (4032×3024) | Usually full size | Small quality reduction |
| 24–48 MP photo | Scaled to roughly 12–16 megapixels | Done automatically |
| PNG screenshot from a laptop | Full size | Palette of up to 256 colors |
Will compressing to 2 MB reduce quality?
Usually very little. Phone cameras save JPEGs at a high quality, and the first step down removes a lot of bytes without a change you can see. Look at the result zoomed in on fine detail, such as hair, leaves or small text: if it looks the same, you are done. If the image is only slightly over the limit, the quality barely moves at all. To shrink a file while keeping every pixel of its dimensions, see reduce image size without changing dimensions.
What if the site also limits dimensions?
Some sites cap width or height as well as file size, and say so with a message such as “image too large” even when the file is light. Turn on Limit width and enter the maximum the site allows; the image is scaled down to that width (smaller images are never upscaled) and then compressed under 2 MB. Fix “image too large to upload” covers the other common errors.
